The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder
Parent and Kid Reviews
Based on 12 parent reviews
What's the Story?
In THE PROUD FAMILY: LOUDER AND PROUDER, years have passed since we last saw The Proud Family, and Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt) is all grown up -- literally! She's gained inches in height, a bustline, and a backside to match. She and her friends are all facing changes to their appearances and experiences, and viewers get to see how they handle it all -- from dating to responsibly using social media to lifting their voices for good and remaining true to themselves.
Oscar Proud (Tommy Davidson) is on a mission to protect Penny as she navigates teenagehood, though his methods are suffocating (like insisting that Penny wear military gear to school to cover up her curves). Trudy (Paula Jai Parker), expanding her veterinary career with a pet ambulance, encourages dialogue and relationship building to guide Penny through her teenage years (and at just the right moments, her words of wisdom are exactly what Penny needs). As usual, Suga Mama inserts her comical commentary on everything going on with the family. Through it all, Penny comes of age with her friends and family by her side.
Is It Any Good?
Disney+ just got even better with this authentic, relevant, and seriously amusing reboot. The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will provoke heartwarming nostalgia for parents who grew up on Penny Proud and her friends and family, while inspiring a new generation with life lessons sprinkled with hilarity (as opposed to after-school special sappiness). The consistent animation style, the hip-hop and R&B soundtrack, and the modern-day slang and jargon maintain the vibe of the show and solidify its authenticity. Yes, stereotypes abound, but they compel viewers to reflect on what they believe and to have the discussions as a family about people's experiences and the world around us. Like its predecessor, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder offers the representation that was lacking for so long in television, specifically in cartoons -- displaying a Black family in all of its animated realness, for the world to root for.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about representation in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Why is representation important on television? How does The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder master representation? In what ways does the show provide viewers with windows (a look into the lives of identities that may be different) and mirrors (the opportunity to see themselves reflected)?
Why is this show one that the whole family can enjoy? What is entertaining for parents? What is entertaining for teens? What is entertaining for kids?
What does Penny learn in this episode? Why is this lesson important? How can you apply this lesson?
