Classic fun, more interesting to older children

Classic show for the whole family to enjoy! I have been watching this show since I was a child and it was on Nick at Nite. Lots of great jokes, funny plotlines, likeable characters. For younger kids, the plot might not be incredibly interesting because many of the topics are adult themed (like work, marriage, etc) but are not necessarily inappropriate. There are just a couple of episodes that we avoid content-wise that are a little more adult. Once my older child turned 8 he has been more interested, can follow the storyline better and really enjoys the comedy (especially any scenes with Buddy). Wholesome family shows (as opposed to "kid shows") are nearly impossible to come by in the modern era so I highly recommend introducing your children to the classics.

The 15-time Emmy Award-winning series, which is loosely based on Reiner's life, combines the elements of a comedy with the elements of a variety show. This creative show platform allowed for musical and vaudevillian-like comedy performances of Van Dyke, Marie, and other members of the cast throughout the five years the show was on the air.

It's definitely entertaining, but what makes The Dick Van Dyke Show historically significant is its reflection of a middle-class awareness of the Kennedy Administration-inspired social movements and trends of the time while still focusing on the traditional issues surrounding Rob and Laura's marriage and domestic life. The result is a show that has timeless appeal, which continues to play an important role in American popular culture.
