Positive Role Models
a little
The parents and grandparents in this show care for their family, but they can be overbearing or distant. There are malevolent characters who parade as good people.
Diverse Representations
a little
The majority of characters are South Korean. Expect some stereotyping: a character who's obese is played by an actress in "fat suit," and is shown to be eating all the time.
Parents need to know that The Atypical Family is a South Korean drama (available with English subtitles) about a family who loses its superpowers. A character battles depression because he blames himself for his wife's death. There are graphic images of car accidents. An overweight character who binge eats is made fun of for her size, and she's played by an actor in a "fat suit." A main character drinks to excess and smokes cigarettes. Language includes "damn," "hell," "bastard." Betrayal is a theme in this show, as is compassion.
In THE ATYPICAL FAMILY, the Bok family meet atop a cliff to discuss their future. They used to be able to do many things-- fly, travel through time and space, dream the future -- but their powers are only a memory. Will they find their gifts again? Or will they learn to be more human without them?
Darkly funny and intriguing, this K-drama takes its time warming to a boil. Just when it seems the slow pace won't merit rewards, The Atypical Family throws a clever twist or an emotional nugget in the mix. Claudia Kim's (Avengers: Age of Ultron) character Bok Dong-hee drops snarky lines, and the depressed Bok Gwi-ju (Jang Ki-Yong) flops about like a drunken fish.
Themes of alcohol abuse and eating disorders are present in this show, so know your teen before diving into this one. Fans of melancholy romance will enjoy this one the most.
