What's the Story?

SASHA REID AND THE MIDNIGHT ORDER is a reality series that follows a group of women investigating cold cases and serial killers throughout Canada. University of Calgary professor Sasha Reid holds a Ph.D. in developmental psychology and is responsible for creating the world's largest database of serial killers. With the help of Anjali Arora, Ayah Ellithy, Florence Tang, Marina Jarenova, Hasti Pourriahi, and Hana Georgoulis, Reid reviews profiles and uses data science in hopes of gaining a better understanding of how the murder was carried out. Calling themselves "The Midnight Order," each of the women use their different academic backgrounds, career specialties, and interests to help Reid paint a broader picture of each case, especially those associated with victims from marginalized communities, in hopes of connecting them to known serial killers. Interviews with family members, friends, and former investigators also help them as they attempt to link evidence together in order to solve the case, while reenactments and archive footage help viewers understand specific events.

This true crime docuseries combines intellectually driven sleuthing efforts with Hollywood-like style in an attempt to create a series that's as entertaining as it is smart. Sasha Reid and the Midnight Order features a diverse group of well-educated women using their expertise to understand how serial killers operate, and who use a range of science-informed techniques and critical thinking to paint pictures of who committed the murders and how. But the significance behind who they are and what they do sometimes gets lost, thanks to the lighting and camera work used to amp up the drama as they work a case.

The characterization of The Midnight Order as a real-life secret society committed to "save the unprotected" is also a conspicuous attempt to add some excitement to the overall production. As a result, despite the empowered group of women and interesting investigations, Sasha Reid and The Midnight Order feels like it's missed its mark. But true crime fans looking for some solid true crime stories may find pushing past this a worthwhile endeavor.
