What's the Story?
Rosie (voiced by Ellora Lopez) is a 5-year-old Latina who lives in Texas. Her family is multicultural and blended; her mom is White, and her dad is Mexican. Rosie has a little brother, Iggy, and an older sister, Crystal, who is a daughter from her mother's first marriage. Her tía (aunt) and cousin live nearby, while her grandmother lives in Mexico. Each episode explores a concept, such as electricity or family relationships, that gives Rosie the opportunity to learn something new. When this happens, Rosie states "Rosie's rule," which can range from an innocent idea like "always make time to play with your cat" to deeper concepts such as "sometimes failing helps you express your feelings." When she doesn't "get it," she takes time for some mindfulness, saying "I need to flop," taking a break to do some breathing exercises.
Is It Any Good?
In addition to language skills in Spanish and exposure to Mexican traditions, this colorful preschool program teaches children about cultural diversity, basic civic concepts, and soft skills in a fun way. At heart, though, Rosie's Rules is about family. Rosie's family are loving and understanding. Despite coming from different countries and speaking different languages, they find what they have in common and celebrate their differences as well.
Respect for elders is also prominently addressed. Rosie uses technology like video calls to keep in touch with her grandmother in Mexico. The adventures of this multicultural, bilingual girl will appeal to young kids around the world.
