What's the Story?

REWIND THE '90S looks at American culture in the Gen X decade, focusing on trends and innovations that are still relevant today. Each episode looks at a different topic, from the rise of the internet to the origins of reality TV, connecting the dots through archival footage and interviews with people who were there.

Is It Any Good?

This show does a good job of picking compelling topics and making connections to contemporary culture, but it tends to highlight entertainment over information, giving a shallow portrait of a complex era. Rewind the '90s is unnecessarily punctuated with a bunch of talking heads-style interviews with C-list celebrities and minor players in the subjects it covers. While some of these interviews are insightful (like those talking about the inherent bias in the editing for the TV show Cops), they are mostly edited into brief, vague statements along the lines of, "Wow, yeah, I loved Beanie Babies/Jerry Springer/the internet."
