Arresting but PG-13 look at sexual abuse and bigotry in Nickelodeon
Families should keep in mind that this series delves into sexual abuse, primarily of children, but only goes as far as it has to visually and verbally. It could’ve been better— I wasn’t a fan of how much they glossed over Drake Bell’s CSA, just because he faced worse CSA doesn’t make him forgivable. He mentions it briefly and just kinda goes “yeah, I did my time” (nothing but probation and community service) before making it into a “me problem” about a few media sources misrepresenting the case. Loses 2 stars for that, never they never got his victim on to say anything about her experiences which was super contradictory to the whole premise. The layout also seems a bit off (e.g. they go into the first abuser at the start of episode 2 and only cap off the story at the end) but that could just be me. I’m glad truths in it are finally reaching a mainstream audience, although the ironic bias in favor of Bell takes away from it. But, honestly, I think the plethora of 17+ reviews on here exposes another bias, this time among the user base here, where Sound of Freedom is given low age ratings because of its political bias despite also having CSA themes but Quiet on Set, which, while biased regarding Drake Bell, doesn’t have as political of a stance, is immediately given a high age rating.
Content Guide:
Inappropriate dialogue: There is in-depth, detailed discussion of instances of sexual abuse of children and adults, particularly in Episode 3 but throughout the series. The content of the show focuses almost solely on sexual abuse and will likely be triggering to anyone with these triggers. Women writers discuss the objectification they faced on set, primarily in episode 1.
Language: Sh*t is used but is censored. Sl*t is used uncensored. Racism, misogyny, and fatphobia discussed and depicted in children’s TV. Homophobic defense by one of the executives that a worker accused of abuse is “just touchy because he’s gay,” falsely claiming that his behavior is typical of gay men.
