Pikwik Pack
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Pikwik Pack is about a group of four friends: Suki the hedgehog, Axel the racoon, Tibor the hippo, and Hazel the cat. Their job is to deliver imporant packages to their animal friends. At the beginning of each episode, we meet a friend who has a preschool-friendly problem, like a smoothie shop not being able to mix their flavor of the day, or a kid's snow castle getting knocked over. Then, a package appears at the Pikwik headquarters, and it's up to the Pikwik Pack to deliver it. Each package has a magical tag that tells them who the package is for, where it needs to be delivered to, and when it needs to be delivered. The Pack checks the map to find out how to get to their destination, and they pick the best transportation mode to get there (helicopter, train, boat, or truck). They deliver the special package in the nick of time, and it ends up being the magical perfect object that solves their friend's problem. As the Pikwik Pack goes on their package-delivering adventure, they learn a simple and sweet lesson about friendship along the way.
Is It Any Good?
While this show travels some well-worn preschool TV terrain (a team helping people who have a problem, a map, and being very enthusiastic about mail), this sweet series has some standout elements. The characters (and the voice actors that perform them) are super charming and also feel like very relatable preschoolers, albeit animal ones. The animation is old-school in style, and young kids will be drawn in by the simply drawn characters and their brightly colored world. Preschoolers will also love the focus on things that loom very large in their worlds: friends, vehicles, mail, and snacks.
Grown-ups sensitive to shows modeling consumerism may be a bit wary about a show that revolves around packages being delivered, but this show doesn't veer into unboxing territory or overly emphasize "stuff." Instead, Pikwik Pak celebrates the excitement we all feel when we get mail, and is much more about the adventure of delivering the package. The show also does a fantastic job of featuring one social-emotional lesson per episode, and each lesson is demonstrated in an easy-to-understand story. The Pikwik Pack delivers packages, yes, but also lots of fun and great life lessons too.
