Good show, but very violent.

Great show, very fun, but also very gritty and violent. One character gets his head unexpectedly blown off, there’s a bunch of profanity, and a ton of monster blood. This is definitely not a show for younger kids.

Worth a Watch

Pacific Rim: The Black is a very well-made show. The characters are intriguing, the world-building is solid, and the action is harrowing. There is a lot of violence and danger, including death and some graphic blood splatter. Children being left alone to survive and parents in danger are also key themes. The world of The Black is intense; the show passes that tension on to the audience. It can be exhilarating if your kids are ready for it.

What's the Story?

PACIFIC RIM: THE BLACK is an anime series, building on the story of the original film Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim: Uprising. The series follows a brother (Taylor) and his younger sister (Hayley), who learn to pilot an abandoned Jaeger (huge manmade fighting robot). They cross a post-apocalyptic Australia overwhelmed by monsters known as Kaiju and search for their parents who headed to Sydney in their own Jaeger. Will they find their parents? What sacrifices will be made along the way?

Viewers will no doubt be surprised to find that this anime series succeeds where its live-action predecessors fell flat. Just as action packed and exciting as the original films, Pacific Rim: The Black also manages to be heartfelt with moments of real poignancy thanks to the underlying theme of family love. Episodes are gorgeously animated and, when combined with the series' top-notch voice actors, have an undeniably high production value. The story is also compelling, fast-paced, and delightfully interspersed with moments of wry humor.
