What's the Story?
MYSTICONS is an animated series about a group of young women chosen to fight evil forces in the mystical realm of Gemina. Zara Moonwolf (Nicki Burke) and Piper Willowbrook (Ana Sani) are orphans who steal to feed other abandoned kids in Drake City. Meanwhile, Crown Princess Arkayna Goodfey (Alyson Court) and the royal family's griffin wrangler, Emerald "Em"Goldenbraid (Evany Rosen), are taught to respect the Dragon Mage, from which the power of the original Mysticons came from. But when the four unexpectedly run into each other, the Dragon Disk chooses them to become the new generation of legendary heroes. Now armed with special powers, they must find the four spell books from the Codex to save the world from the evil Dreadbane, and to keep him from resurrecting the Queen of the Spectral Hand, who was destroyed by the original Mysticons a century ago.
Is It Any Good?
This fun, female-centered series offers lots of action as the young women showcase their superpowers and unique weapons while fighting evil forces. It also contains magical creature companions, trainers (known as astromancers), and dark forces that young anime fans find appealing.
Mysticons isn't particularly educational, and it does contain some of the traditional fantasy violence these types of shows are known for. Nonetheless, it's very colorful and compelling. Best of all, it offers young viewers an entertaining alternative to the many male-centered series produced for this age group.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Parents can talk about what Mysticons represent. What is their purpose? Is the fact that they have superpowers the most important thing about them, or is there something more?
Do you think Mysticons would be very different if the team were made of young men instead of young women? Why (or why not)?
