What's the Story?

A young girl gets the gumshoeing gig of a lifetime in MIRA, ROYAL DETECTIVE. The series centers on 8-year-old Mira (voiced by Leela Ladnier), a girl whom Queen Shanti (Freida Pinto) taps as the next detective to serve her fictional city of Jalpur, India. When mysteries need solving, Mira steps up to gather clues and piece together a solution with the help of her mongoose pals, Chikku (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and Mikku (Kal Penn), and assorted family members and friends.

There's lots to love about this thoughtfully crafted preschool series and its many positive takeaways. To visit Mira's kingdom is to immerse oneself in elements of Indian culture, from manners of dress to music to traditional celebrations. It's clear that authenticity was a primary goal of the team behind Mira, Royal Detective, and the attention to detail in creating the Indian-inspired setting and in matching voice actors with the characters is evident and appreciated.

Mira herself is delightful to tag along with; she's a friend to everyone, a resourceful detective, and a loyal member of her family and her community. Her willingness to help others and her determination to never give up on a cause make her a good role model for young kids. The show doesn't treat the inherent cultural exposure as a social studies lesson, but for those unfamiliar with Indian culture, the exposure that comes from watching Mira in her surroundings encourages respect for diversity.
