Violence & Scariness
some
Mild violence as expected in superhero stories: villains commit crimes across the city, there are physical fights in which characters throw objects at each other, and multiple weapons are used. Some explosions occur. Civilians demonstrate fear. The hero always saves the day.

Positive Messages
some
Character's journey emphasizes the importance of second chances and teamwork. Megamind states "it feels good to be good" and learn it's okay to make mistakes.
Positive Role Models
a little
Megamind may be set on being a hero but still has much to learn. While his intentions are mostly positive, he sometimes falls into old habits like teasing, mocking, and belittling. Friends are supportive and model bravery, kindness, and cleverness.
Diverse Representations
a little
Some on-screen diversity but narrow representations. One villain is a Black female. Megamind's sidekick is a young tween voiced by a Japanese American actor. Female characters are the brains of many operations but may still need to be rescued by men. Jokes on generational gaps could be interpreted as stereotypical or ageist, with characters called "geriatric" and "cheugy."
Parents need to know that Megamind Rules! is a spin-off series following the misadventures of villain turned superhero Megamind. It's set after the happenings in 2010's Megamind as well as 2024's Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate. It features the same characters, in the same city, as the former villain learns the ropes of being a superhero. While Megamind doesn't always know what to do, he does his best to be positive, juggling challenges like fighting brand-new villains or going viral on the internet, with plenty of humor. At times, jokes come from old habits like teasing and mocking others for laughs. As expected in a superhero tale, villains commit crimes in the city, but nothing too scary for kids who are used to these tropes. Characters engage in physical fights with no solid visible damage. Mild insults like "dang" and "dumb" are used.
Megamind Rules centers around a former Supervillain's journey onto the path of good. Megamind, with the help of his friends, uses his genius, talent, and good nature to help the people of Metro City. While the show features characters from the 2010 film, there are new characters like Keiko Morita who give kids someone to relate to and aspire to be.
Every episode has a meaningful and well delivered messages. It takes hard work and strong principles to become a good person. It's important to be honest with your friends and family. Sometimes bad decisions you make in the past can have consequences, but it's important to learn from them and grow.
While this show is geared for younger audiences, there's no reason why teens or even adults wouldn't enjoy watching. The cast is incredible and the writing is fun and largely narrative based. While there is minor cartoon violence none of it results in any physical harm. Megamind is trying to be a hero after all!
By far the best thing about the show is the comedic timing. Honestly had a good laugh every episode, just because the characters are all so well written. You can imagine someone who spent years of being a villain has a hard time learning to be a hero and role model.
Speaking of which, if Found Family is your thing, Megamind Rules is a gold mine!
For fans of the original 2010 film, there is a special slow burn romance to unfold as well, which is worth every second.
Even after watching it with the kiddos I went back and watched through Megamind Rules a few times on my own already. I honestly hope the same will be true for your family as well.
Don't listen to the haters, this show it a DELIGHT!
This show has been the only thing keeping my boys sane all summerlong. Adam Lambert's song is catchy and they will sing it on car rides.
What's the Story?
MEGAMIND RULES! follows the misadventures of Megamind as the former supervillain takes on a new mission: being a superhero. While he defends Metro City from a multitude of villains alongside friends Chum, Roxanne, and Keiko, he must also juggle the pressures of modern life, including becoming an influencer.
While perfectly fine for new audiences, this series may fall short of satisfying fans anticipating the same wit and humor of the first movie. As a spin-off, Megamind Rules! introduces a fresh take on the original plot, new voice actors, a younger tone, and a slightly different animation style. Less of a family experience than the original movie, it caters to a younger audience, making it an enjoyable watch for elementary school kids looking for funny, lighthearted action.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Megamind's change from a villain to a hero in Megamind Rules! What do you think about giving people a second chance? What are some ways you can help someone change their behavior?
Sometimes, Megamind has negative interactions, like mocking and even lightly slapping another character. Does this help him win them over? Can you think of better and kinder ways to solve a disagreement?
Many times in the series, Megamind gets made fun of for not being "in" on the latest trends, relating it to being old. Do you think age defines our abilities? Think about moments when you enjoyed learning and sharing new things with others.
