Marvel's Rocket & Groot
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MARVEL'S ROCKET & GROOT tells the story of the titular characters before their days as Guardians of the Galaxy. Pals Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Trevor Devall) and Groot (Kevin Michael Richardson) are bounty hunters, traveling the galaxy to earn funds to buy a new ship.
Is It Any Good?
Marvel fans will enjoy these buddy comedy shorts, but without the context of the Guardians characters or their friendship, the stories mean little to other viewers. With episodes that run less than two minutes in length, there's no time to develop a story or even introduce the characters themselves, so bursts of frenetic action and some physical humor is what you get.
If you already know and like the unlikely friendship between these two Guardians, though, Marvel's Rocket & Groot will help round out your picture of them. Kids whose first introduction to the broader franchise is this series probably will seek out more of the characters' adventures in other productions.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about positive character strengths like compassion and teamwork. Which do you see in play between Rocket and Groot? When given the chance, does Rocket always choose his own needs over his friendship with Groot? What accounts for their continued friendship?
How does knowing a role model's flaws affect your admiration for that individual? Is anyone perfect? Do we hold celebrities to a different standard than we have for average people? Is it fair to do so?
What can we learn about courage from TV superheroes? Which ones are your favorites, and why?
