What's the Story?
Based on the Marvel comics by Dalibor Talajic and Daniel Way, MARVEL'S HIT-MONKEY is an animated series about a Japanese snow monkey being mentored by the ghost of an assassin. When Bryce Fowler (Jason Sudeikis) is hired to kill a Japanese politician, he manages to do the job. But when he arrives at the extraction point he discovers that his employer has sent hired guns to eliminate him. Wounded, Bryce flees to the mountains, where he is helped by a tribe of intelligent macaques. But the American hitman is still in danger, and when his employer's assassins catch up to him, they shoot him and slaughter all but one of the snow monkeys. Now, thanks to his dying words, Bryce is connected to the lone primate (Fred Tatasciore), whom he names Hit-Monkey. Together they are committed to finding the employer and unapologetically seek retribution.
Is It Any Good?
The adult-oriented animated series stands out for featuring a primate capable of navigating the Japanese Yakuza underworld and seeking payback for the acts committed against those around him. While it doesn't go far enough to be a superhero spoof, there is a comedic edge to it, especially when it comes to the relationship between the antiheroes. But thanks to the main primate, Hit-Monkey's tone sometimes feels dark and brooding, making you wonder about how you're supposed to feel about what's happening. Nonetheless, it's a fun, creative story, and one that will prove entertaining to folks who like this sort of animated entertainment.
