What's the Story?
In a series inspired by the mother-daughter team's 2019 The Book of Gutsy Women, Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton visit with a cross-section of women who are making changes in their worlds. Speaking with a wide variety of subjects from academics to comics, firefighters to athletes, the Clintons seek to understand what makes these women bold and different, and why they do what they do.
Is It Any Good?
The two famous female Clintons are refreshingly game in this limited series that brings them into contact with interesting women making waves in their fields. In pursuit of more information (and more empathy) for subjects as disparate as Dr. Jane Goodall and Megan Thee Stallion, Chelsea and Hillary take a clowning class, rappel down the side of a mountain, and just sit and listen to their interviewees. The results are charming and uplifting, not the least because it's pretty fascinating to watch two women who have been famous (and polarizing) for three decades.
Hillary and Chelsea have a relaxed, easy interplay with each other (one enjoyable early moment involves the pair repeating family-favorite puns), and though the focus is on illuminating the lives of their subjects, sometimes a piece of their history emerges, as when Chelsea explains that she's sometimes had a contentious relationship with professional comedy as someone who was made fun of on SNL as an adolescent. How awful, how sad, and how brave, and yes, gutsy, for both Clintons, lightning rods for criticism themselves, to reveal themselves even a little bit in this aptly-named series.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about women's history. What are some of the moments in history that have made the biggest impact on women's lives today? Who are your female role models?
One of the goals for documentaries is to strip away artifice that prevents viewers from knowing the subject on a personal or emotional level. Does Gutsy seem to have this goal? Does it achieve it?
How does Gutsy document its subject's integrity and perseverance? Why are these important character strengths, particularly in politics? What are some of the qualities that make participants role models for young men and women around the world?
