What's the Story?

The American dating series reboot FARMER WANTS A WIFE (2023), based on the British TV show of the same name, is a reality series featuring single farmers looking for true love. Farmer Allen, Farmer Hunter, Farmer Ryan, and Farmer Landon each choose 5 of 32 single, urban-dwelling women to host at their respective farms for six weeks. Throughout their stay the women are introduced to all aspects of farm life. They also get opportunities to spend some one-on-one time with the man they hope will be their forever partner. But throughout their stay each down-to-earth bachelor must also make difficult decisions, and ask women with whom he is not connecting with romantically to leave. After six weeks, each farmer must choose the one woman he hopes will never want to leave.

Is It Any Good?

Hosted by Jennifer Nettles, the series combines the expected drama of reality dating shows with predictable country tropes. The "city" women willingly stay at the mens' farms and ranches in Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina, but often have negative, over-the-top reactions to doing chores or working with livestock. Meanwhile, the cowboy-hat-and-boot-wearing farmers do their best to exude down-home politeness and awkward charm while professing their love for their animals and their land. It's all pretty gimmicky, and at times rather slow. But this version of Farmer Wants a Wife ultimately follows the same basic formula of dreamy date sequences, mean behavior, and broken hearts used in other shows featuring folks trying to find a spouse among strangers in front of a TV audience.
