What's the Story?
DORAEMON is the story of a futuristic robot cat named Doraemon (voiced by Mona Marshall) who travels back in time to keep a boy named Noby (Johnny Yong Bosch) on the straight and narrow, thus ensuring a brighter future for him and his descendants. From the demands of school to coping with the neighborhood bully, Big G (Kaiji Tang), Noby could use all the help he can get, even if he's loathe to admit it. To counter Noby's persistent impulsiveness, Doraemon uses a variety of technologically advanced gadgets, but once they're in Noby's hands, they typically have unforeseen consequences that Doraemon must then undo.
Is It Any Good?
Doraemon is a well-known character in the manga world, having made his comic book debut in the late 1960s. He's an altogether likable fellow, always spouting sage advice about respecting his parents and making homework a priority, even though his efforts are mostly lost on the fancy-free Noby. Still, by drawing attention to Noby's flaws, the show points out for kids the repercussions of negative behavior traits such as rudeness and selfishness, despite Noby's rarely embracing the lessons.
A big winner with kids will be Doraemon's secret gadget pocket and its trove of tools for the tasks at hand, such as a trio of toys that play music to inspire Noby to express his emotions. It's a creative and fanciful solution to problems kids may find familiar, and it offers plenty of laughs in the process. And with the Anywhere Door that allows the characters to travel through time, there's no telling where -- or when -- their adventures will take them.
