What's the Story?

Each episode of Disney's Magic Bake-Off features three teams of 6- to 14-year-olds attempting Disney-themed baking challenges. Hosted by teen personalities Issac Ryan Brown and Dara Renee, the show also features Disneyland pastry chef Graciela Gomez as the head judge. Every episode challenges the kid bakers to make a dessert based on Disney classics like Star Wars, The Lion King, and Toy Story. As they work on their bakes the kids also compete in mini-challenges that demonstrate fancy baking techniques. At the end of the episode, Gomez and a special guest judge decide whose Disney-rific dessert captured the most culinary magic.

Kids who love baking shows, Disney, or both, will adore this show. It's super positive and emphasizes the kid contestants' efforts. The kids are completely charming -- from a teenage boy who started a Boys Who Bake club in his hometown to sisters who want to take over their parents' Hawaiian-Asian restaurant when they grow up. The young chefs are quite impressive, but they're definitely still learning too. There's decent culinary teaching throughout, with the show taking time to explain baking techniques. The only slight bummer in the show is the Video Challenges, mini-challenges that include time-lapse videos made by production partner Tastemade. The challenges slow the show down a bit, making it longer than it needs to be. Otherwise, this show is great for getting kids excited to be in the kitchen as well as showing them great examples of perseverance.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how the kids make mistakes on the show but show perseverance. How does it make you feel when the contestants mess up? Do you think you could stay calm and figure out a solution when things go wrong?

  • What Disney show or movie would you like to make into a cake? Can you draw it? Should we try to make it?

  • This show talks about a lot of Disney shows and movies during the competition. Can you see how the show is kind of acting as a commercial for Disney? What do you think of that?
