It's a sad programming world we live in

The fact that this has only a 15+ age rating makes me question all other ratings. Just consider the title and premise alone. It's a sad programming world we live in.

What's the Story?

COUPLE TO THROUPLE is a reality dating series featuring monogamous couples living out their non-monagamous fantasies in a tropical paradise. Hosted by Scott Evans, it stars four curious couples who have been together for a long time spending a month in a luxury resort together for one month. Every few days they're given the opportunity to invite one of 14 "open-minded" singles to join them in their suite and become a "throuple." Helping couples cope with the different feelings they may have about the polyamorous relationships is Dr. Shamyra Howard. At the end of the month, each couple will decide if they want to continue a life of polyamory, remain a couple, or break up.

Is It Any Good?

The voyueristic social experiment offers viewers a chance to see how long-time monogamous couples explore and cope with changing the dynamics of their intimate relationships. It purposely hypes up the sexual experimentation between the cast, ranging from adult games designed to test the intimacy boundaries of someone's long-term partner to steamy bedroom scenes. This, combined with the everyday antics of folks trying to attract one another makes the whole production feel salacious and trashy. But Couple to Throuple also brings up (albeit superficially) a few of the important questions to consider when thinking about entering polyamorous relationships, which highlights how complicated they can be compared to the fantasies people may have about them. Nonetheless, most of this is offered as a way to titillate audiences for the sake of adult-oriented entertainment.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about dating reality series. Why do people agree to appear on them? Is there really an expectation of finding a healthy, long-term relationship? Or are they looking for something else?

  • Will Couple to Throuple change people's perceptions of polyamory? Or is it simply produced to entertain people with the casts' sexual exploits?
