Brilliant miniseries

A nice series comprising of short episodes that each look at a social situation and Baymax helps the person to resolve the situation. Diverse representation, sensitively addresses a number of topics that should be open and discussed such as menstruation. Cracking job Disney!

What's the Story?

BAYMAX! is a series based on a character from the movie Big Hero 6. It's set in the fictional and futuristic city of Sanfransokyo and centers on Baymax (voiced by Scott Adsit), a robot who's designed to help people with their health problems. In other media, Baymax finds himself doing serious superhero work, but here he finds the time to follow his calling: helping regular folks feel better. Each episode finds him working with a single person: for example, an elderly woman who has to overcome her fear of exercise, a tween who's surprised by her first period, and a café owner who can't stop working.

Is It Any Good?

It's a pleasure to have Baymax back and doing what he was born (uh, programmed) to do: help people feel good and stay healthy. In this thoughtful series of gentle and funny stories, Baymax explores the city and finds people who need his help -- not with fighting crime or flying across town, but with smaller, more personal problems. This intimacy is what makes the show a remarkable and often moving slice-of-life; it doesn't shy away from deep emotions and issues like grief and loss. Like Pixar's Turning Red, the show frankly and warmly shows Baymax help a tween manage her first period (complete with the actual words "period," "menstruation," and "tampon"). It's exciting to see this bouncy health robot work with people who don't always get attention on TV or in movies: An elderly woman is the star of one episode, a middle-aged workaholic the star of another. With each patient, Baymax uses his skills to help out, and learns a lot along the way.

Physical comedy also takes center stage once again as Baymax manages to squeeze his huge inflatable body into nooks and crannies, especially when he tries to manage an extra small café -- it's super funny, and the animation is outstanding (though the episodes can feel too short at only 7 minutes long!). Is it an adventure to watch a robot trick an old woman into swimming at the local pool? Or make sure an energetic but injured professional gets the right amount of rest? Baymax! makes these little tales feel utterly exciting, as only a true superhero can.
