What’s It About?
SHE SOUNDS LIKE ME is an unscripted talk show hosted by mother and daughter voice actors, Rachael Laya Hoffman and Cyla Grace Hoffman. Both mother and daughter bring their voiceover skillset to this simply-produced podcast. The hosts chat about the challenges of their daily lives and the ways they care for their mental health, along with pressing social issues. The show is conversational rather than scripted. Though there is a good amount of discussion around racism, their outside perspective on the matter sometimes falls short with clunky analogies and over emphasis on "just being kind". Episodes rarely end by tying a bow on the issue discussed, instead inviting listeners to continue the conversation with their own loved ones.
Is It Any Good?
This unique podcast is a compelling window into the world of a contemporary mother and daughter navigating their relationship and our changing world. While the content on She Sounds Like Me is appropriate for older kids and teens, it often feels like it's speaking more directly to parents. With its spare production, meandering conversations, and wink-and-nod narration from mom Rachael, some kid listeners may not hang in for the full 20 minutes of this talk-show podcast. Parents, on the other hand, may enjoy the peek into Rachael's parenting approach and her transparency with her precocious daughter. Discussions of supporting Cyla through moments of anxiety, using gamification to incentivize completing chores, and navigating grief are snapshots of a novel kind of parent-child dynamic that is collaborative and open hearted. In the end, the show is all about the ways Rachael supports and encourages her daughter to grapple with the difficult parts of life.
