What’s It About?
In SESAME EN LAS COMUNIDADES, children are greeted by a familiar cast of characters including Elmo, some of his Muppet friends, and the human adult and children members of the Sesame Street community. Elmo cheerfully leads the show with his innocent curiosity and helpful nature. In each episode of the first half of the series, significant life lessons are discussed, including themes of personal and emotional well-being, simple math, money, and getting ready for school. More sensitive subjects such as hunger issues, planning for an emergency, and facing challenges are also included in the series and are managed gently and clearly. The second half of the series offers shorter episodes in which Elmo and his friend learn new words based on what they see all around them.
Is It Any Good?
Young viewers (and their parents) will be delighted to hear their pal Elmo along with other familiar friends in this charming and educational series. Sesame en las Comunidades doesn't disappoint, continuing the series' history of engaging educational programming. Each episode includes clear, quality conversation, examples of strong role models, and suggestions for how to solve the kind of common day-to-day issues and challenges kids face. With songs helping to reinforce each lesson, kids will feel like singing and dancing along with their Muppet friends. Parents will benefit from support and guidance on how to address potentially tricky issues, as well as the additional resources offered at the end of every episode.
The episodes in this series have staying power with material that is fresh, relevant, and meaningful.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how community is a big part of Sesame en las Comunidades. What does "community" mean to you? Who are some of the important people in your community and how do they help support the community you live in?
The podcast focuses on the importance of communication, especially when it comes to feelings. How do you communicate some of your most common feelings; for example, fear, excitement, sadness? Who do you feel most comfortable communicating your feelings to?
Have you ever been in a situation where you needed help from a friend or where a friend needed help from you? How could using teamwork help in problem-solving? Why is teamwork an important character strength?
Elmo and his friends are very curious, asking lots of questions to understand events in their lives and community. What makes you curious? What are some tools you can use to find out more about the things that spark your curiosity?
