What's It About?
MOMENT OF UM began as a segment on the popular Brains On podcast before spinning off into its own show. The podcast for curious kids releases a new episode each weekday focusing on a specific, often scientific, question. Topics include everything from animals and biology to food and the Earth. With each question, the show brings on a special guest expert to offer quick answers. Episodes are only a few minutes long, so even younger listeners won't lose interest in the fun, unexpected information presented.
Is It Any Good?
Moment of Um is a perfect podcast pick for kids who love asking questions and parents who may not always have the answers. In each episode, a special guest expert spends only a few minutes answering a fun, unexpected question. The questions themselves range from simple trivia such as "Why do bats sleep upside down?" to more unexpected ones like "Why is pee yellow?" In any case, the goal of Moment of Um is clear: to get listeners thinking about the world around them. This podcast is sure to get young listeners engaged in learning and to develop their own curiosity about the world. Critical thinking is a muscle you must exercise, and the spotlighted questions on Moment of Um could very well serve as their daily workout.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Moment of Um episodes are only a few minutes long. Why might this approach be more or less effective than taking an extended look at a topic? Can you dive deeper into a question and answer that interested you?
Moment of Um typically features kids posing each episode's question. If the members of your family were to submit a question to the show, what would it be? Why is it special that these questions come from kids themselves?
While so many other podcasts cover a specific topic, Moment of Um offers a broader experience for listeners. Does this make the show more or less engaging, and why?
This podcast encourages curiosity. Why is this an important character strength?
