Absolute garbage.

watched the first half of it and it is what I said: GARBAGE. Maria and Tony have absolutely no chemistry at all; Maria is disgusting and way too forward especially for that era. Don't believe me? Tony and Maria are at a dance. The don't know each other. But they make eye contact and it's really awkward unlike most romance stories, and they keep it for like a full minute. Then they follow each other behind these bleachers and randomly dance like a bird's mating dance. No joke. In the first thirty seconds of meeting Tony she just straight up makes out with him. I thought this would be a "sweet, innocent, romance" story but no its just a stupid movie full of girls being objects and people thinking that they truly love someone when all they want is sex. Absolutely ridiculous.

Beautiful movie! I cried at the end!

This movie was amazing! I hadn’t seen the original so I went into this movie with an open and fresh mind. The cinematography stands out and it’s a beautifully shot film. The music and dancing are incredible! I had a couple of the songs in my head after I watched it. There are a couple sad deaths and the fighting could be intense for younger viewers. There is an implied sex scene and Anita and Bernardo kiss and walk into their room. There is an attempted r3pe scene which was disturbing to watch but nothing was shown and for younger kids it would fly over their heads. Overall I think it was a great film and Riff, Anita, and Maria were all standouts in this film!

Why does this exist if we can go watch the original?

SEX: 3/10 Romantic storyline and a couple of instances where two people sit on a bed together; it cuts to the next scene. VIOLENCE: 6/10 A character is seen with a screw in his ear; his ear is infected. Also, there are knife fights with some blood, but it's not too gory. LANGUAGE: 4/10 Two s--ts, One t-ts, Five godd-mns, Four hells, Three d-mns This movie gets an 11+ for violence. I give this three stars because this movie is basically the original, and even though it's just as well done, why can't we just watch the original. The actor who plays Tony isn't the best actor, and while I like how it is trying to be less racist than the original, and have Puerto Rican actors, why does Steven Spielberg have to direct this movie? I think Lin-Manuel Miranda or some other Puerto Rican director, or at least a Puerto Rican screenwriter should make this. It doesn't add anything new. Nevertheless, the sets and costumes are amazing and I like the changes in the set.

Waste of time.

It's so cringey and weird...Why did I waste 2 hours and 36 minutes of my life I'll never get back? Also it has violence and attempted rape so not for kids.

Overall a great movie with beautiful songs and choreography

This was an incredible movie that helps to accurately display what it was like for the Puerto Ricans, it also shows why teens should stay away from gang violence, I mean both of the gang leaders where killed, that should show how dangerous it is. Overall the love story was beautiful and the characters where engaging, if you are a parent watching this with your teen just know that their is only about one inference to anything really inappropriate, and if you’d like you could easily fast forward.

west side story is amazing! just keep in mind a few things…

This is an amazing movie! West Side Story is a classic musical and Spielberg’s imagination of the story is just fantastic. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Two characters are stabbed to death. If this scene is fast forwarded through (once the rumble begins until the cops enter the salt shed), the violence shouldn’t be too bad for those over 12. As long as they understand the general concept that two characters died, they won’t have missed much. There is one implied sex scene, but for younger viewers, it will just go over their heads. I first watched this movie when I was 12, and most of the references and inappropriate comments I didn’t even noticed until I rewatched it a few months ago when I was 14. At the very end, there is an attempted rape scene. This was disturbing for me to watch once I knew what was happening, but when I first watched the movie at 12 years old I thought the white men were just tackling the woman. Of course this is not the case, but this is what it appears as to younger viewers. This movie is appropriate for ages 14 and up, or 12 and up if you fast-forward the most violent and brutal scenes. Of course, please use your own common sense when determining if this movie is appropriate for your children. I thought this was a great movie overall. Very touching and I loved the romance! Aside from a few select violent scenes that someone over the age of 14 should be able to handle, this movie is appropriate for those 12 and up with a bit of fast-forwarding.

Fantastic but some things to watch out for

This movie was excellent, absolutely lovely and beautiful choreography and music. The violence is a lot but I wouldn’t say excessive, it was a peek into what life was like for immigrants and how hard it was. Many violent scenes one part was a knife fight and two people violently stabbed and one person shot. There is implied sex and decent amounts of language. There is one part we’re a young woman is almost raped until someone intervened. It was a excellent movie overall but is meant for teens.

Ahhhh, so good!!

The violence and language are tough, but I seriously LOVED This movie. My eight year old sister watched it, but she’s pretty mature and I know that other eight year olds might be disturbed by the violence and sad ending. I really liked all the characters and costumes, and I’m planning to watch this movie again very soon!!

one of my new favorite movies!

It certainly wasn't what i was expecting. I thought i was going to see a very heartwarming love story but instead there were three deaths in the end of the movie. Not what i would consider bad violence considering other things i've seen. There's also an attempted r@pe scene with the Jets and Anita. On the bright side there are a lot of catchy songs (my fav is Cool) and dance numbers. Spielberg made yet another masterpiece.
