Positive Role Models
some
Mathias is warm, free-spirited, and reckless. He sometimes deceives and steals, excusing it as good for others or due to unreasonable prices. Victoras is quiet, serious, and regimented in his behavior. He avoids social interaction and doesn't trust easily. Mathias gradually challenges Victoras to show curiosity, try new things, and have fun, though sometimes for the sake of his own enjoyment.
Diverse Representations
some
Lead characters are two men who develop a romantic relationship, which is handled with warmth and humor, showing thoughtful representation of a gay romance. One character is Greek and the other German, and neither are stereotyped based on their country of origin.
Parents need to know that The Man with the Answers is a beautiful drama about a gay romance with sexual themes and strong language. Victoras (Vasilis Magouliotis) is a Greek man who goes on a road trip following the death of his grandmother. He meets a German man called Mathias (Anton Weil), who hitches a ride and helps navigate the way across Italy and Germany. Despite being very different people, the two develop a romance and there is kissing and caressing in bed with the implication sex has taken place. Nudity from behind shows a man's backside and genitals briefly in a non-sexual context. There is strong language, including "f--k" and "s--t," and characters smoke cigarettes and pot, as well as drink alcohol to the point of drunkenness and hangover. The main car is an Audi and the brand is mentioned in relation to another car. A warm romance with plenty of comedic moments, and some spectacular scenery, this will appeal to mature teens and adults. Some dialogue is in English and some in German, Italian, and Greek with English subtitles. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails.

Warm, humorous, and beautiful to look at, this road trip romance is an enjoyable romp through the Italian and German countryside that centers a gay relationship between two mismatched characters. The Man with the Answers poses plenty of questions, and it's not clear, even at the end, which man has the answers for whom, but that's the point here. Both Victoras and Mathias learn from the other, and perhaps inherently need each other as they quarrel, walk away, and are drawn back to each other over the course of their photogenic trip, which ends up being as healing as it is amusing. The landscapes are a tourist board's dream and the chemistry between the two leads will make you smile along with them, as they're pulled together magnetically despite their own differences.
