Too dark for kids
I remembered this movie fondly, but I first watched it as a teenager. It contains quite a bit of dark content that isn't appropriate for young kids. For example, in one scene fairy tale creatures are rounded up and sent off in cages, including The Three Bears. Later on, you see a bear skin rug made from Mama Bear (it's wearing her bow). My seven-year-old picked up on it immediately, pointing out that the villain "killed Mama Bear and made her into a rug."
None of my three kids liked the movie and I regret playing it for them.

memey and even if you discard the memes it is still a good movie. Mild action, Donkey, basis of most memes, and some messages you might be able to use in life. (ogres have layers, onions have layers)

ITS PERFECTTTT!!!! IT MADE ME WANT TO IMPROVE MY LIFE AND BECOME A BETTER PERSON!!!!
I liked...no...LOVED this movie. this is more than a movie, this is a religion, this is understanding, this is like a big ol bite of a mayonnaise sandwich. if I had the choice between oxygen or shrek I'd choose shrek everytime, this sweaty little mop bucket of a movie is perfect. also Shrek is really good looking like omg.

Shrek was not for little kids
i think shrek is a amazing movie but its not for kids because it has some mild swearing like a-- and danm and has lots of Adult humor shrek says lord farquadds compensating for something and later donkey says shrek says lord farquadd is compensating for something which i think means he has a really small and then gets kicked by shrek the magic mirror says snow white lives with 7 older men but is not easy robin hood sings about how he likes to get paid and lord farquadd is seen naked in bed and he has covers move and if you look closely he has a boner with that being said i dont recommend it for anyone under the age of 13

Shrek is love. Shrek is life.
it was definitely to dark and the scene where they torture the gingerbread man gave me nightmares. Would not recommend if you don't believe that Shrek is love. Shrek is life. watch it when your older. watching this movie when i'm older, there definitely is some inappropriate things flung around that go over younger kids heads.

Just ok, and one scene left my little one shocked
I remembered enjoying it very much when I watched it for the first time as a young adult but it didn’t hold up as I watched it with my 6 year old. There is one scene with a bird exploding while singing because the tone gets so high. My daughter was in so much shock. She cried for one hour after the film. I‘ve never seen her like this. Unfortunately this made the movie especially unfitting for us and I would not watch it with her again. Most jokes are for adults anyway.

One of the best films of the 2000s!
Excellent film! It came out the year I was born. I love how the idea was thought up to make a movie combining many fairytale characters and making a story out of all of them together! It is cute and I have never seen a film like it before! In my opinion, it is one of Dreamworks’ best films of all time. The movie also has a great soundtrack. It can’t top the sequel, but it is better than the third and fourth movies. A positive message presented in the movie is showing what true love is all about, and Shrek would probably serve as a positive role model because although he gives a hostile and misanthropic introduction, he is willing to do whatever it takes for him to get his swamp back. He is also a good person at heart. I will say, though, that despite the fact that it is an outstanding work of art, it does have some edgy humor and language, and it definitely deserves the PG rating, but I think it is okay for kids who are 6 or 7 years old at the youngest if they watch with a parent. This film will never be forgotten, and it is truly one of the best films of the 2010s!

Language is of little concern
As long as your kids don't repeat words like damn or jackass, this movie is OK. 8+ is fine, but have a talk with them. Antz had way worse profanity.
