Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED FREEDOM, the world peacekeeping organization Compass is trying to negotiate peace between the Naturals and the Coordinators. But things go awry when a third party enters the situation. Can Kira (Soichiro Hoshi) and company avoid further war?
Is It Any Good?
There's a lot to appreciate here for longtime fans of the series. The updated animation, CGI, and action in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom are all lovely and help make this film as entertaining as possible. Sometimes the film forces supporting character involvement too much, but some of this is expected given how many characters the film wants to at least have some screen time. In the same vein, while fans will be ready to go within the first five minutes, newcomers will likely be confused by all the characters, how each character is related to the others (friend, foe, ally, romantic partner), and what is going on, generally.
The story quickly sorts itself out, so newcomers will at least be able to enjoy the plot, but the characters are never given any introductions or backstories, so newcomers will have to just slowly piece together which characters seem to be the central heroes, which characters are villains, and which characters are less consequential. But the action is frenetic, fast, and exciting, and the larger stakes resonate well in this world that pits Naturals against Coordinators, free will against determinism, and friendship against duty.
