Frequently Gory, Frequently boring

Hellboy is a film about a half demon who hunts down monsters for the BPRD and a resurrected witch who wishes to wipe humanity off of the earth. The tone is similar to other comic book movies albeit with a more horrific pulpish edge. The filmmakers make full use of the R rating as the film is filled from start to finish with extreme bloody violence and gory images. The films content and plot are very unrealistic and fast paced so this reduces the overall impact of this content but the imagery is still graphic and could disturb or gross out audiences. The film also contains a fair amount of F words and other profanity. Overall I feel that the frequent over the top brutality makes the film unsuitable for younger teenagers but people aged over 15 can handle the films violence as although visceral it is highly unrealistic and fantastical. That is if they want to subject themselves to an unoriginal and bland comic book film.

Wheres Ron?

The CGI is about as good as tekken 1 back when the playstation came out. If you want to watch a hell boy film watch Ron's take on it...a true hell boy with actual actors instead of a film ruining the bloke from stranger things.

Forgettable

This movie shows that sometimes bigger is not better. There is a bigger budget, more gore and a ton of action compared to the original Hellboy but it all feels empty and hollow. The stakes are ramped up too but I found myself not caring nearly as much as the original movies. Everything seemed in a hurry to get from one cgi setpiece to the next. By contrast, the Guillermo Del Toro directed movies had masterful pacing. It took the time to develop the characters before throwing you into the action. And by then you were invested in them and the story. I remembered big chunks of the movie years later before I bought it on dvd because it's a memorable and well made flick. Hellboy 2019 may be worth watching for a few decent jokes and a couple of good fight scenes but mostly this reboot is a below average, muddled and, most unforgivable, forgettable movie that you will have trouble recalling an hour after watching it.

Ok, but very gory and disturbing!

This is a very gory and disturbing movie. It has graphic bloody attacks and upsetting flesh sounds. I found it very upsetting when Gruagach rips the monk’s tongue out and all of those innocent civilians getting ripped apart in the city. I liked how well-made the gore was though. Mature teens and adults only.

Dark, gritty, and gory! Enjoyable movie!

I don't get the bad reviews, honestly. I've seen and liked both Hellboy film versions. David Harbour did the role justice, just as Ron Perlman did before. This version is definitely darker and gorier...if you're into that, then you'll dig this movie. My 13 year old son was going to watch this with us but changed his mind at the last minute. I'm kinda glad about that because I think it would've been a bit much for him as far as the gory visuals go anyway (he's not into horror movies, and the gore factor in this film is right up there). There are a handful of F-bombs, and a few other cuss words throughout, but nothing our 13 year old hasn't heard before. The language isn't really a huge deal, but the violence and gore may be too much for some younger people, so just keep that in mind.

Surprisingly well done and interesting throughout. Way more gore and horror from older version.

People tend to see the previous films through rose colored nostalgia glasses. I personally think this is, by far, the best Hellboy movie. The comparisons and the promotions highlighted the differences and the worst versions of the makeup and did not do this movie justice. This is way more gritty, gory and adult, but it is also more action packed, true to the comic story and better paced with a satisfying plot that doesn't plod along. All said this movie would have been a hit if it wasn't for the nostalgia backlash and early presumptions, and because of that I'm pretty sur ewe won't get a sequel, which is actually a shame as I think this was a worthy reboot and way too scrutinized. Keep in mind though, this is an action horror movie with all the disturbing and disgusting elements of the genre, so for anyone thinking "Marvel" or "superhero" , this may be offputting very quickly with the amount of gore and abhorent demonic story. Definitely not for everyone.
