What's the Story?

DANDELION follows the title character (KiKi Layne), a young woman who wants to become a music superstar but is currently stuck in the gig economy working as a hotel singer. Feeling like she's at a dead end in both her career and her personal life—which includes taking care of her ailing mother, Jean (Melanie Nicholls-King)—Dandelion leaves home to try her hand at a music contest. After a series of events, she finds love in the form of fellow struggling musician/singer Casey (Thomas Doherty). Together, they make and perform music over the course of a few days while falling in love. Their ups and downs fuel Dandelion's creativity and transform her into a more complete, dynamic musician.

This romantic musical drama honors the vastness of the Midwest landscape and the struggle it takes to make it as an artist. Many artists know that the grind has only gotten worse with social media, and Dandelion includes conversations about how impossible it can seem to reach your dreams. The film also celebrates the beginning of new love, even if that love seems immediately doomed by extenuating circumstances. Layne is wonderful as the title character, revealing more aspects her talent as she performs musically. Doherty compliments her well with his own musical and acting talents. Together, they work, as any good musical duo does.

Thankfully, though, the film is still Dandelion's; Casey never takes over the film with his baggage. Subverting gender stereotypes, he's not the focus, just the catalyst for Dandelion's musical ascension. Through Dandelion's successes, ecstasies, and struggles, she figures out a way to make it all work as she steps toward stardom.
