What’s It About?
The world of MINECRAFT LEGENDS is a world where the inhabitants, the creatures, and the land itself work together in harmony to create a virtual paradise. It's a world overseen by the powers of Foresight, Knowledge, and Action. The peace and tranquility is suddenly shattered as magical portals open up throughout the realm and Piglin invasion forces pour forth from the Nether with the goal of corrupting the Overworld. To save this world, Foresight, Knowledge, and Action use their powers to reach out through all the realms to summon a hero with the traits and skills needed to drive the Piglin back to the Nether. That hero is you. You won't need to fight the Piglin forces alone, though. As you ride throughout the world, collecting resources and building up defenses to fend off Piglin attacks, your presence and actions will inspire others. Uniting the Overworld under your banner, you will command your own armies in battle against the Piglins. If you can drive back the Piglins and stop the corruption of the Overworld, the legacy you leave behind won't just be a story ... it will be the stuff of Legends.
Is It Any Good?
The minds behind harvesting and building phenomenon Minecraft have never been one to shy away with experimenting with its tried-and-true formula. They already proved that by creating Minecraft Dungeons, a hack-and-slash dungeon crawler set in the Minecraft universe, and Minecraft Legends takes the franchise in yet another vastly different direction. By harvesting what people recognize about Minecraft and using it to build an open-world real-time strategy game, the developers deliver a game that feels instantly familiar and yet defies any expectations.
One thing that has to be said is that, whereas Minecraft is easy to pick up and play, Minecraft Legends is anything but. It take a lot of practice and a lot of patience to learn how to gather, build, attack, defend, and command all at once at any given time. It's a half step away from being utter chaos at first, and it's a lot to take in. But once you start to get the hang of how the game plays and get into the groove, you can't help but get caught up in the action. It's satisfying to call on swarms of creepers, zombies, golems, tigers, beetles, and even turtles to unite under your banner and help turn those Piglin into bacon. And if you bring along a few friends for some multiplayer action, the fun is only magnified. Minecraft Legends might not be the Minecraft you expect, and it's definitely not a pick-up-and-play experience. But if you're willing to put in the time, it's a great addition to the overall Minecraft universe.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about violence in video games. Is the impact of the violence in Minecraft Legends affected by the lack of blood and gore? How do games like Minecraft present violence to younger players? How can art style, such as the pixelated style in Minecraft, affect the impact of on-screen violence?
How can spinoffs help to widen the audience of popular franchises? Do you prefer seeing games that take a popular game and adapt it to a different genre? Or is it better when a spinoff falls into the same familiar genre as the original, but maybe with a new look or setting?
