What's the Story?
In TUMBLE, author Celia C. Pérez shares 12-year-old Adela's coming-of-age journey as she decides whether or not to be adopted by her stepfather. She is curious about her birth father, and determined to know more about him before she decides. As she learns more about her father's side of the family, Addie discovers a new side of herself. She also deals with drama at school, where she has been selected to play the lead in the school play, a part she doesn't want. As she navigates these new relationships and experiences, Addie has lots of questions. Why did the drama teacher choose her for the lead? Why is the new kid at school acting suspiciously? And why won't her mom talk about her father?
Is It Any Good?
Authentic and bursting with fresh imagery and lucha libre spirit, this middle grade novel centered on 12-year-old Mexican American Adela delights. Addie is a strong girl, full of determination. And between her mother, who worked as a single parent, and her abuela (grandmother), a multifaceted powerhouse, it is easy to see who she gets her strength from. Addie is also supported by men who are empathetic communicators. The thoughtful dialogue and meaningful interactions about issues from common intergenerational differences in Latino culture to adoption, and on to activism and legacy, are relevant. And the story can inspire empathy and respect for people from diverse backgrounds and different experiences.
Just as in real life, there's a lot going on. Addie isn't perfect, but she shows up authentically, whether she's at the diner with her mother and stepfather, planning the school play with her peers, or pulling her father's past back into her present. And Pérez somehow manages to leave no character undeveloped. Each person has their quirks, their hopes, and faults. And they seem real enough that your kid might be ready to go find this fictional Esperanza, New Mexico, and meet them all.
