What's the Story?
With thrilling stories about pioneers like Greta Thunberg, Autumn Peltier, and Rachel Carson, REBEL GIRLS CLIMATE WARRIORS: 25 TALES OF WOMEN WHO PROTECT THE EARTH spotlights the world-changing work of women on the frontlines of the fight for climate justice. Meet conservationists, activists, water protectors, philanthropists, authors, and other women from all over the world who have stood up to polluters and used their amazing talents to protect the planet.
Is It Any Good?
Best consumed in small snippets, this is an excellent bedtime reading choice for both girls and boys. What sets apart Rebel Girls Climate Warriors: 25 Tales of Women Who Protect the Earth is how attainable it makes activism to its young readers. There are a number of tales centering on women so fierce that they're almost impossible to forget. Greta Thunberg is featured, as is Julia Butterfly Hill, the woman who lived in a California redwood tree for two years to stop it from being cut down. Even more important, there are a number of stories of women and girls who fought against human-made pollution and climate change in much more pedestrian ways. One such tale features the young sisters Ella and Caitlin McEwan, who achieved remarkable things simply by starting a petition. Ultimately, they were able to prevent over 3,000 tons of plastic waste a year by persuading two major fast-food companies to stop giving away plastic toys with their kids meals.
Readers will appreciate that the book covers women from many different countries, backgrounds, interests, and abilities to create a truly inclusive set of role models. Each page-long biography is accompanied by a beautifully illustrated portrait, done by 25 female and nonbinary artists from around the world, making this a great book to read along with your child. There's also a collection of activities and ideas on how readers can celebrate nature and live more green. All of that, plus extended audio stories of select subjects on the Rebel Girls Dream On app, makes this a book every elementary student should have on their bookshelf.
