What's the Story?
I AM SMART, I AM BLESSED, I CAN DO ANYTHING! begins with Ayaan waking up for school and feeling unhappy because he's worried about not knowing all the answers and not being smart enough at school. His mother engages him in a loving problem-solving strategy by encouraging him to recite a positive affirmation: "I am smart, I am blessed, I can do anything!" Ayaan still feels worried as he starts his walk to school, but he slowly grows more confident as he's greeted by friendly neighbors. Throughout the story, Ayaan is empowered by the simple yet meaningful words of the affirmation, and he starts to believe that they are true.
Is It Any Good?
This unique and beautiful book empowers and inspires readers of all colors and ages to embrace their emotions and believe in themselves. First-time authors Holder and Holder-Young have brought Ayaan's story to life in I Am Blessed, I Am Smart, I Can Do Anything!, encouraging children to create their own special self-affirmations. The story is a reminder that no matter how sad we may feel, we have the power to change things with self-confidence and self-esteem. Readers will be motivated by this story when they are having a bad day, or have to go into a new or unknown situation. Brightly colored illustrations depict diversity and neighborly love and care. The book's vocabulary is developmentally appropriate for a young audience, and emphasizes feelings language.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about young Ayaan's concerns before going to school in I Am Smart, I Am Blessed, I Can Do Anything! Ayaan feels worried because he doesn't always know the answers. How do you feel before going to school? Is it OK if you don't know all the answers? Why?
Ayaan's mom helps him to remember how blessed and smart he is, so that he feels happy before going to school. What would you like your mom or dad (or whoever helps you get ready in the morning) to say to you before you leave for school, so you can feel happy?
Ayaan sees lots of friendly neighbors who love him on his way to school. Draw or paint a picture of your neighborhood. Don't forget to include the people, places, and animals you see, and use lots of colors!
