What's the Story?
Child celebrates sister's birthday in EL CUMPLEAÑOS DE MI HERMANA DULCE/MY SISTER DULCE'S BIRTHDAY as the family goes to pick out a piñata and candy, then sings and celebrates with friends.
Is It Any Good?
This sweet-filled bilingual picture book celebrating a birthday is just as sweet to read. The child telling the story is happy to celebrate their sister every step of the way. The illustrations are colorful and cheerful, although one illustration has six candles when the text calls for seven. Erika Said's rhyming text in Spanish is cheerful and flows naturally, the English translation is well done.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about celebrating each other like the child in El cumpleaños de mi hermana Dulce/ My Sister Dulce's Birthday. The child narrating doesn't get to choose the piñata or candy, and doesn't get any presents, but they're happy for their sister anyway. What's something you can do to celebrate someone else?
Piñatas are a big part of Mexican celebrations. Which piñata would you pick? The family fills the piñata with candies that won't get squishy-squashy. What would you put in the piñata? The book shares part of the piñata song, you can look the rest of it up and listen to or sing it together
What are some of the ways that you celebrate birthdays? Parents, you can talk about your traditions with your kids.
