Susan F.'s Profile
About Susan F.
Susan has spent her professional career joyously connecting kids with the best of children’s literature. With master's degrees in both library science and educational technology, she has worked as a children’s librarian at the San Francisco Public Library and as a lower school librarian/media specialist at the Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco. There she partnered with faculty to design cross disciplinary, literature-based curricula, providing context for kids to further understand themselves and the world. To that end, she worked to blend the school’s library and maker-space programs and spear-headed development of a nationally recognized model of essential 21st century skills to empower students as learners. As a long-time children’s book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle, Susan loves sharing what's new, exceptional, and relevant with a wide audience. On the national level, Susan has served, often as chair, on major award committees, administered through the American Library Association/Association of Library Service to Children. Those committees include the Caldecott, Newbery, Sibert, Batchelder, and Legacy Awards, as well as Notable Books for Children. Susan also loves to hike, cook, knit, travel, read grown-up books, play Wordle and Spelling Bee, and “grandmother.”
