What's It About?

PEEKABOO WILD uses the game of peek-a-boo to teach 10 animal names. Kids tap on the shaking grass to see which animal is behind it. Is it the giraffe or maybe the crocodile? The grass opens to reveal the animal, which roars or maybe grunts. The animal name appears in lowercase letters and kids hear the name in English or Spanish. Kids tap on the animal to move to the next surprise behind the grass.

Is It Any Good?

Peekaboo Wild is very cute—the colorful animal illustrations are hidden by a stand of tall grass, and each time the grass comes down there is a different animal shown. The animal sounds (which can be turned off) will play while the animal is hidden behind the grass, so children can guess what the animal is before revealing the picture. Children can learn the names of these ten animals, and then the screen shows all of them together. The animal names can be learned in English or Spanish.

Given that there are only ten animals, this app seems a little pricey. However, what it does, it does well with bright illustrations and sounds. This is an app that would be good for very young children, but older children may quickly grow bored with it.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Play along with your kids. Ask them to describe each animal. What color is it? Is it tall or short?

  • If your kids love animals, look for books and games that introduce a broader range of animals from different habitats and different parts of the world.
