What’s It About?
The games on MONTESSORI LETTER SOUNDS - PHONICS IN ENGLISH, SPANISH, FRENCH & ITALIAN are given in order of progression. For kids as young as 3 and just starting the process of app play and prereading skills, there's a sound-recognition game. That's followed by a letter-sounds game for older kids. Then kids move up to a mix-and-match game and, finally, a sound-it-out game. Other activities such as a letter-tracing sandbox, a notebook, and an "image box" also are available for any age and stage in the prereading process.
Is It Any Good?
Parents and kids who already know and like the Montessori way of teaching -- simple, quiet, and self-directed -- will love Montessori Letter Sounds. Those who are expecting more action, noise, and sparkly graphics may not find these games as impressive. That said, there's no question that the games are age-appropriate, exceptionally well-crafted, and progressively challenging. Also, the supplemental activities that are offered are fun and can be played at any level.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about different ways to learn letters: Encourage your kid to practice letter tracing in real sand, flour, and other materials.
Start your own "image box" by cutting out pictures from magazines and collecting photos of family members for your prereader to name. Write the matching word or name on the bottom of the image.
Play with the five language options: Pick one to set as a second language so kids can toggle between them as they listen to words and sounds.
