What’s It About?

To use HUNGRY CATERPILLAR PLAY SCHOOL, choose one of five areas of activities. A parent tutorial encourages parents to play with their kids first (and then suggests that kids play 10 to 15 minutes, twice daily). Tap on shapes and colors, and choose from six activities. Tap on the ABC chalkboard, and choose from three activity areas: the alphabet song, lowercase letters, or uppercase letters. To choose from four areas -- songs, counting, sequencing, and size/shapes -- tap on the abacus. There are also books and art supplies to decorate Eric Carle-inspired animals. Parents can also tap the arrow to view the parent tips video in all areas.

This is a marvelous learning app for kids from toddler to kindergarten age because of its range and content. Hungry Caterpillar Play School shows Eric Carle's sweet, colorful, and eye-catching animal characters as animated features in the games. Many of the games and all of the songs are appropriate for kids at the younger end of the suggested age range (2-6), while the books can serve as an excellent progression for many kids who will read them independently by age 6. Most of the games give kids a visual lesson on what to do and a try-it before they start the actual game. Also, the parent tips offer easy ways for parents to engage in learning activities with their kid offscreen. The only part of Hungry Caterpillar Play School that's a bit disappointing, surprisingly, is the art area. The painting tool doesn't offer young kids much accuracy, which could be very frustrating for young kids whose fine motor skills are not yet developed, and the Carle-like collage option is even less detailed. Still, this app is likely to become a daily favorite for many young learners, especially Carle fans.

  • Families can talk about the activities your kids enjoy on Hungry Caterpillar Play School. Ask them why they like the games that they play most. Play some of the games with them that they seem to ignore or avoid.

  • Read some Eric Carle books together and see if you and your kid notice some of the same characters from this app. Who do you see? What are they doing?
