Apprenticeship - Veterinary Nursing

This level three work based veterinary nursing course is designed for applicants already working in the workplace at an approved veterinary training practice. All practices must be approved by the college and apprentices must be working with a registered veterinary nurse or veterinary surgeon (clinical coach) for the duration of the program.

Programme Features

All learners will be supported by a training adviser and tutors who will monitor progress towards achieving targets on a regular basis (every 56 to 61 days). Modules are assessed via written assignments, exams and practical clinical skills log. Apprentices must sit an

Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) at the end of their course to be eligible to join the Register of Veterinary Nurses.

Programme content

Learners following this apprenticeship will have to achieve a framework of qualifications which will include:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Small Animal Pathway)
  • Essential skills at level 2 ( AON and Communication
Progression and employment

Following successful completion of the apprenticeship students are eligible to join the register of veterinary Nurses. Opportunities to progress onto Higher Education courses such as HNC/D, Foundation Degree or Degree (BSc). Progression within employment – RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing.

Method of assessment

Coursework, assignments, exams, Clinical Skills Log and Objective Structured Clinical Exam.

Entry requirements
  • Five GCSEs at C or above which must include maths, English and science
  • Full-time paid employment at a veterinary training practice.
  • Alternative qualifications at the same or a higher level may be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Working with a registered veterinary nurse or veterinary surgeon to assist with the completion of the nursing progress log.
  • These programmes are part financed by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.
