VIRTUAL KING DAY celebration

IN HONOR of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 95th birthday

Monday, January 15, 2024 • 11:30 am Central

The inclement winter weather has given us cause to cancel the on-site portion of our 2024 King Day Celebration. The good news is we at the Museum present to you a vibrant, virtual King Day celebration that will warm your heart and inspire you!

Our virtual King Day 2024 celebration features musical performances by Memphis musicians Garry Goin, TykeT, Karen Brown, Adajyo and many more.  Dr. Hasan Jeffries, Associate Professor at Ohio State University and editor of Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, will give scholarly insight on Dr. King life and legacy.

In Partnership with the Memphis Grizzlies
With Support from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee

Since 2015 the Memphis Grizzlies have collaborated with the National Civil Rights Museum on discussions at the intersection of race and sports.  Every year we have explored a variety of compelling topics with esteemed panelists.  This year’s panelists include HGTV’s Design Star and lifestyle blogger Carmeon Hamilton, WNBA great, 2024 Sports Legacy honoree, Atlanta Dream co-owner Renee Montgomery, and Memphis Mayor Paul Young. Museum President, Dr. Russ Wigginton, is the moderator. The livestreamed event is free.

Small But Mighty Storytime

with Author Nancy Churnin

For young virtual viewers, museum educator Dory Lerner presents for King Day a special Small But Mighty Storytime session. The book, Martin and Anne, written by Nancy Churnin and illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg, is about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank, both of whom were born in 1929. We will meet the author of this beautiful book and talk about ways these two courageous individuals were alike and how they were different. We'll share ideas for children and families to remember Dr. King, his character, and the virtues he taught around love, peace, and justice.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?"
