We want to maintain the effectiveness of our antibiotics, for humans and animals. That is why we at the BVL are working intensively on the topic of "antibiotic resistance".

In order to maintain the effectiveness of our antibiotics, we must only use them prudently and in a targeted manner. In order to be able to protect certain active substances as the last remaining therapeutic option, their use must be very limited.
... in pets and hobby animals
Antibiotics may only be used if there is a medical necessity and a therapeutic success can be expected. Antibiotic therapy is not necessarily indicated for every bacterial infection.
... in food-producing animals
Sustainable animal health and hygiene management is part of veterinary herd management. Antibiotics must not be used to compensate for operational deficiencies in hygiene or husbandry conditions.
... in the environment
If humans or animals are treated with antibiotics, this can result in the entry of antibiotic residues into the environment. Currently, there is no process that can eliminate antibiotic residues from manure or wastewater to the same extent…
… limitation programmes and measures
A strategy to limit antibiotic resistance must encompass all sectors concerned - humans, animals and the environment. It therefore requires cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral cooperation in accordance with the "One Health" approach.
