Blackmon Perry Assistant/Associate/Full Curator of African American Art & Art of the African Diaspora
Summary: Reporting to the Chief Curator and supported by the Curatorial Department, the Curator, will hold the first endowed position in the museum’s history. The Curator will oversee the museum’s growing collection of African American and African diasporic works in all media, generate groundbreaking presentations of African Diasporic art in the form of temporary exhibitions and permanent collection displays, and help establish the curatorial approach to the museum’s $180-million capital project to build a new museum building in Downtown Memphis. The Curator will bring creativity and vision to present operations at the museum’s Overton Park location and to the development of the new building. As the largest majority-Black city in the United States, with African American history and culture that has impacted the nation, Memphis is a unique context for this curatorial position. The museum’s new location, which is in proximity to the National Civil Rights Museum, Beale Street, and historic sites that were pivotal to the Civil Rights Movement such as Clayborn Temple, will underscore connections to these storied locations.

Learn MoreDocent
Would you like to learn more about art and share your knowledge with others? Founded in 1965, the Brooks Docent Program was established by the Brooks Museum League. Serving thousands of visitors each year, Brooks docents engage their audiences with the artwork on view and foster the development of visual and creative thinking skills, often providing the first contact many children and adults have with the visual arts. We strive to provide a positive, meaningful, and relevant experience with art.
Learn MoreInternships
If you are a high school or college student, you can gain incredible experience and school credit as an intern at the Brooks. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about careers in an art museum, and to build mentor relationships with museum professionals, who can advise you as you pursue your educational and career goals. Interns work on significant projects under the guidance of experienced museum staff.
