Iittala – Finnish design gains popularity around the world
The story of Iittala began in 1881 when a glass factory was established in a small Finnish village called Iittala. In the early days, their design followed the continental trends, which meant that the glass was very decorative and was made by blowing and pressing. Iittala was among the first ones to steer away from this style, towards a more refined, minimalistic, and practical style. Their breakthrough happened in the 1930s and 1940s when Iittala began collaborating with designers Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Kaj Franck, and Tapio Wirkkala. These designers formed the basis of Iittala’s design philosophy, that is, the seamless combination of aesthetics and function, which can still be clearly seen in the brand's items today.
