How do I choose the right overalls for my child?

A warm and weather proof coverall is a must for keeping your child warm and dry during the fall and winter months. In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about overalls for children, and what to consider when choosing an overall.

To choose the right overalls, you need to consider the weather, season, needs, and the child's age. In general, there are two different types of children's overalls: a thick, lined one (winter overalls) and a thin, waterproof one (shell overalls). Winter overalls are perfect for outdoor play in the snow and cold, while shell overalls are better suited for outdoor play in the rain and snow.

Should I choose softshell, shell or winter overalls?

Softshell

Softshell is a softer and more flexible version of shell clothing, which is windproof, quick-drying and water-repellent, but not completely waterproof. Softshell is suitable for most outdoor activities and weather, except for harsh weather and drizzle.

Shell overall

A shell overall is perfect for active children who like to run around, or when it's a bit warmer outside. It is breathable, durable and water-repellent, and easy to move around in. Its main function is to protect from rain and wind, but it's not lined like a winter coverall, so if it's cold outside you should add a warm layer underneath, preferably fleece and wool.

Winter overalls

Winter overalls are the best option if it's really cold outside. Go for a properly lined overall with a high water column to resist snow and slush. The advantage of a winter coverall is that you don't have to add other warming layers underneath, making it a little easier to dress and undress your child.

What features should I look for?

Functionality is key, so look for details like a removable hood, fit, mobility, stretch and crotch space. Your child should feel comfortable and free to run around and play.

Lined or not

Cold winter days with snow and wind require a warm and lined overall. In the fall and spring, a thinner, waterproof shell suit that can withstand light rain and play in the sandbox is sufficient.

Reflectors

An overall with reflectors is a definite advantage, so your child is extra visible during the dark winter months.

Foot straps

An important detail when choosing overalls for your child is to make sure they have foot straps to prevent sand and moisture from getting into their shoes.

Removable hood

It's important that the hood is removable, and comes off on its own if your child gets stuck in it while climbing trees or a climbing frame. Some hoods can be adjusted in size, so they don't hang down too much. Hoods with a fur trim are popular and can work well to protect the face from wind and snow.

Pockets

Winter overalls with pockets are not only a feature appreciated by children, who like to be able to put their small items there. Parents also like pockets that can hold extra mittens or a pack of tissues.

Zips and buttons

Putting on and taking off winter overalls can be a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Look for buttons and a zip that can be easily unbuttoned for easy on and off. It is also important that the zip is protected by soft fabric at the neck to avoid chafing.

Breathability

Depending on the activity, overalls need to be suitably breathable. If it is too breathable, heat may escape and it may be difficult for the child to keep warm. But if the breathability is too low, the child may instead become too hot and sweaty. And being sweaty in a coverall in cold weather means that your child will soon start to freeze. So look for an overall that suits your child's activity. Breathability is measured in g/m2/day and the higher the number, the better the breathability.

Water resistance

If winter gets slushy, it's good to have a waterproof overall to keep water out. For a garment to be called waterproof, it must have at least 5000 mm of water column (i.e. how much water pressure a material can withstand before letting water through). Check the product description for information on the water column.

Reinforcement

A durable material with reinforced fabric protection on the knees and bum is a clear advantage when your child is crawling on their knees, sitting down to play or sliding down slopes and slides.

How do you best care for overalls?

Overalls get dirty quickly after all that outdoor play in mud and snow. Increase the lifespan of your child's overalls by avoiding too many washes in the washing machine, which can erode the material's water resistance. A better option is to wash off dirt and stains by hand. Shell suits with glued edges should preferably avoid the drying cabinet as they can easily come off in the heat.
