Boeing Research & Technology-Europe Marks 20th Anniversary
MADRID, June 23, 2022 - This month Boeing marks the 20th anniversary of its European research center, Boeing Research & Technology-Europe, which has been successfully matching innovative ideas generated in Europe with the key technology needs of Boeing’s customers around the world.
Boeing Research & Technology-Europe (BR&T-E) has been instrumental in expanding Boeing’s technology collaborations with industry, research centers and universities in several European countries, through its physical presence in Madrid (Spain), Munich (Germany) and Sheffield and Glasgow (the UK).In its 20 years of existence BR&T-Europe has played a leading role in looking for ways to improve sustainability, with a particular focus on hydrogen and electric propulsion alternatives, advanced materials and manufacturing processes and airspace operational efficiency improvements. More recently, in 2021, the European center’s leadership in the area of Model Based Engineering led to the establishment of the Model Based Engineering Global Center, the first multi-site Technology center of this kind with partners across 13 different global sites.
“BR&T-Europe plays a crucial role in fostering global innovation, excellence and competitiveness for Boeing,” said Todd Citron, Boeing Chief Technology Officer. “With a 20-year track record of innovations in materials, machining, sustainability, operational efficiency, autonomy, and model-based engineering, BR&T-Europe is poised to help the company accelerate its technology capabilities, and is committed to remaining the technology hub of Boeing in Europe in the future.”
BR&T-E was established in Madrid in 2002 and today comprises a team of over 100 people in Germany, the UK and Spain, most of them are engineers and scientists recruited from across Europe – and has become a key technology integrator, collaborating with universities, research centers, airlines and industry partners in 25 different countries.
“This anniversary marks a truly important milestone for Boeing and for its continued commitment to Spain,” said José Enrique Román, Vice President of Global Technology at Boeing Research & Technology and Managing Director of Boeing Research & Technology-Europe. “BR&T-Europe has been an outstanding example of the connection between Boeing and Europe’s talented research-and-development community. Much has been accomplished during the past 20 years, and we are counting on even more innovation and growth in the years to come.”
BR&T-E, headquartered near the Madrid-Barajas Airport, currently focuses on three key technology areas
- In Spain, engineers focus on model-based engineering, data-enabled airline services and solutions to better integrate autonomous systems in shared airspace.
- In the UK, the team develops and matures machining and metal forming technologies, as well as next generation laser-powdered bed fusion for additive manufacturing.
- In Germany, the focus is on developing drilling technology and work on materials modelling, while helping suppliers implement technologies and qualification process.
Boeing has replicated the success of the European R&T center in 8 other centers globally.
