Boeing Sheffield

In October 2018, we opened a production facility in Sheffield – our first manufacturing site in Europe. The £40 million, 6,200-square-metre facility is located on Sheffield Business Park and manufactures components for trailing edge actuator systems for 737 aircraft. All suppliers to the factory are based within 100 miles of Sheffield.

Boeing Sheffield has around 100 employees and more than 25 machining operatives have been trained there in conjunction with its training partner, The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) Training Centre. Following their first year in the training centre, the apprentices spend years two and three of the programme in our Sheffield facility.

We have a long-standing partnership with the University of Sheffield and founded the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with the university in 2001. The machining and materials research campus was crucial in Boeing’s decision to build its first manufacturing site in Europe nearby. Today, the AMRC supports 520 jobs and contributes more than £55 million to the South Yorkshire economy each year.

Sustainability

We became the founding member of the University of Sheffield’s Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), leading the way for the company to help develop and bring sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to the market.

The EIC includes the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre (SAF-IC), a first-of-its-kind facility in the UK that will help test and certify new SAFs, and the Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC), which will contain pilot-scale production facilities suitable for investigating different methods of producing SAF.

President of Boeing in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Nordic region, Maria Laine, talks about our close partnership with the AMRC.

Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T)

Our BR&T team based in Sheffield also works closely with the local supply chain and academia, including research on advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing, with the goal of increasing efficiency and fostering innovation throughout the aerospace supply chain.
