Program and Internship

The Arizona House of Representatives Page Program provides an unforgettable experience working closely with the state legislature.

Pages are non-partisan staff and serve all 60 members of the House of Representatives. The position pays an hourly wage of $17.00. Work typically begins on the first Monday of January. The Legislative Session lasts approximately one hundred calendar days; however, a session can be extended well past that.

Program Description and Overview

The House of Representatives Page Program gives a unique, firsthand look into the inner workings of the legislative process. This paid internship program is an incredible opportunity for professional development and academic advancement by allowing Pages to make extensive connections with peers and mentors throughout the House of Representatives and the Capitol complex. Pages are present during Floor sessions and Committee hearings, which allows them the special opportunity to follow the development of bills to their eventual implementation as laws.

Pages play a critical role in the daily operations of the Arizona House of Representatives. The primary responsibility of a Page is to attend to the needs of the Representatives while on the House of Representatives chamber floor, in standing committee hearings, and in caucus. Pages assist in preparing for floor sessions and committee hearings by distributing legislative material to the desks of members and setting up Representatives’ computers and materials. Pages assist Representatives during floor sessions and committee hearings and are expected to stay for the duration of the meetings, which may proceed into the late evening hours.

Page duties vary, including the delivery of memos and messages, computer and technical assistance, and any other general assistance that is required.

Can I obtain internship credit for the program?
Yes. A majority of academic departments at the state universities and community college districts offer internship credit hours for the House of Representatives Page Program.

Enrollment for internship credit will not take place until after the hiring process has concluded and an applicant has been offered a position at the House of Representatives. For more details on internship credit for the program, please contact your department and/or academic advisor.

What are the House Page Uniform Requirements?
Pages are required to wear uniforms while on the job, allowing them to be easily recognized by employees of the House of Representatives and the Capitol complex. The House of Representatives Page uniform consists of a navy blue blazer, white long-sleeved button-down dress shirt, navy blue dress pants or a navy blue skirt, and a red tie. The Arizona State Legislature is a professional environment, and Pages are expected to adhere to the expectations of decorum and professionalism.

How long is the internship?
Pages will work at minimum 100 days of session starting in January. However, session can run longer than 100 days and go for an unspecified amount of time. Session pages final days will typically be when the House and Senate agree on a budget for the year, following that we will keep a handful of Pages throughout the interim.

How many hours do pages work a week?
Part-time House of Representatives Pages typically work two alternating days a week. For example, a Page may work at the House of Representatives on Mondays and Wednesdays and attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or vise versa. A total of 16 hours a week.

Full-time House of Representative Pages work four 8-hour days Monday through Thursday. A total of 32 hours a week.

What shifts are available?
The program requires that Pages work an entire 8-hour workday in order to obtain the full experience of the legislative process. There are no partial days or shortened shifts available.

Shifts available include:
8:00 am – 4:00 pm
9:00 am – 5:00 pm

There may be indeterminate days where the committee(s) or floor session will continue past 5pm, and we require you to remain working until they conclude.

Do I have to be a political science major or related field to apply?
No, students from all educational backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Do I have to be an undergraduate college student or graduate student to apply?
No.

If I am not selected for the upcoming position, can I reapply for the program next year?
Yes.

How many page positions are available for the upcoming session?
Approximately between 10-20 positions will be available.

When can I apply for the program?
The House of Representatives will begin accepting program applications on September 1^st.

When is the application deadline?

The final application deadline is 5:00 pm on November 7^th.

When will interviews be held?

We will begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews throughout October and November. All interviews will be conducted at the Arizona House of Representatives.
