Fifteen pieces of literature have been adapted with symbol supports. Additional adapted Student Readers can be printed from the PDF files located on the HUB.
The Read & Tell 2 Adapted Literature Collection follows a 13-step framework to teach grade-level ELA standards to middle school students with moderate-to-severe disabilities. Each step is scripted for individual novels to minimize preparation and ensure consistency. The framework follows the suggested procedure outlined by Mims, Lee, Zakas, and Browder (2013) in Teaching to Standards: English Language Arts. The steps are outlined below:
Step 1 Vocabulary Identification
Step 2 Vocabulary Comprehension
Step 3 Title
Step 4 Author
Step 5 Anticipatory Set
Step 6 Open the Book
Step 7 Prediction
Step 8 Read the Chapter
Step 9 Story Grammar
Step 10 Story Retell
Step 11 Comprehension Quiz
Step 12 Writing Component
Step 13 KWL Chart (Not included in all stories)
The Instructor's Guide contains scripted lessons for each adapted piece of literature, details on how to use the curriculum, teaching procedures, as well as data collection forms.
The Student Workbooks contain quizzes with literal and inferential multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Each chapter of an adapted novel contains a corresponding comprehension quiz. Additional Student Workbooks can be printed for each student from the PDF files located on the HUB.
The NEW Writing Journal reinforces the story content through four writing activities per story. Stories contain a writing prompt for each of the four writing styles: descriptive, expository, narrative, and persuasive. Graphic organizers are utilized to provide two leveled options for writing. Additional Writing Journals can be printed for each student from the PDF files located on the HUB.
In addition, the Curriculum comes with Story Grammar Cards, Graphic Organizers, Card Sets, and digital resources on the HUB.
The fifteen pieces of literature include the following: The Trumpet of the Swan, Maniac Magee, Missing May, The Necklace, The Great Gilly Hopkins, Bud, Not Buddy, She's Wearing a Dead Bird on Her Head!, Cheaper by the Dozen, Hatchet, The Red Badge of Courage, Ella Enchanted, There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom, Bridge to Terabithia, Julie of the Wolves, and Wonder.
