Early Reading Skills Builder™ (ERSB) curriculum, based on a multi-year research project from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, is the next step for students who have acquired early literacy skills, including graduates of Attainment’s ELSB Curriculum.
ERSB takes students who mastered these early literacy skills to a 2nd grade reading level. It incorporates systematic instruction and ongoing assessments to teach students to read independently. It’s been proven effective for students with moderate to severe intellectual disability and/or autism, including those with complex communication needs.
Early Reading Skills Builder (ERSB) is a multi-year reading curriculum for students who have acquired early foundational literacy skills (i.e., conventions of print, early stages of phonological awareness, some letter-sound correspondence, and some sight word vocabulary) but need extra support to access traditional reading curricula, especially phonics curricula. For these students, some of whom may be nonverbal, there is a need for systematic instruction and text-to-speech software to augment voice during instruction. ERSB is typically used as a blended curriculum. The full ERSB curriculum integrates traditional formats, like books and manipulatives, with the app.
ERSB has 26 levels with five lessons in each. Each level introduces new letter-sound combinations, phonics rules, sight words, and connected text of increasing complexity. Activities systematically help students blend sounds, segment the sounds in words, decode words, and read sight words in order to successfully read the connected text and answer questions about the text they read. It incorporates systematic instruction and ongoing progress monitoring to teach students to read independently.
ERSB takes students who have mastered early reading skills to a 2nd grade reading level. Early Reading Skills Builder was created through federal funding for research (ED-IES-11-C-0027).
The ERSB Software web-based version is a one or three-year subscription for up to 20 students. Teachers can manage student access to apps, view results, and monitor student usage. Students can log directly into to the app or from a student desktop launch page.
The ERSB Software (excluding web-based) is a component of the Early Reading Skills Builder curriculum.
