The Explore American Democracy Curriculum features 6 units and 12 chapters. Each chapter begins with the Big Picture statement, outlining the most important theme of the chapter, and the 5 Big Ideas. Each Big Idea contains a QR code, which will lead students to an original video based on the corresponding topic. Each Big Idea includes two content-based vocabulary words. "Words to Know" are also included on the Big Picture page of each chapter. These are important words that will be used in that chapter, and in some cases in subsequent chapters as well. Both "Words to Know" and vocabulary words are included in the Glossary.
Each Big Idea features four images. The second image is a drawing of an important figure in U.S. politics. Some people included are from modern times; others are from throughout U.S. history. They, along with additional important people, can also be found in the provided Key People Booklet. The fourth image in each Big Idea corresponds to the "Did You Know?" section, which gives students the opportunity to learn an interesting fact related to the Big Idea content. A "Discovery" page is included directly after the five Big Idea lessons. Each "Discovery" outlines one constitutional amendment that corresponds to the content covered in that chapter. They, along with additional amendments, can be found in the provided Amendment Cards. The chapter ends with a 10-question quiz.
The Curriculum covers key topics - essential ones to any Civics or U.S. Government course - The Constitution, Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, Citizenship, and Economics - and comes with everything you need to provide quality instruction to your students.
